Keep Your Workforce Working and Your Business Compliant

Every day a worker is absent, unfit, or unsupported by a competent occupational health provider costs your business more than you think — in productivity, in liability exposure, and in the hidden administrative burden of managing health-related absences without clinical guidance. Sigma Health delivers employer-focused occupational health services across the whole of the UK, built specifically around the needs of businesses that cannot afford delays, gaps in cover, or occupational health providers who take weeks to turn around a report. Whether you need safety critical medicals before a worker steps on site, a management referral completed before an absence spirals, or a fit to work assessment that gives you a clear, legally defensible decision — we deliver it fast, we deliver it compliantly, and we deliver it in plain language your managers can act on immediately.

Sigma Health is not a generalist healthcare provider with an occupational health department bolted on. We are an occupational health business built from the ground up for UK employers — with the clinical expertise, the nationwide reach, and the operational speed to deliver the assessments, reports, and certifications your business needs without the delays, the vague language, or the weeks-long turnaround times that make most occupational health providers more of a problem than a solution. If your workforce needs occupational health support, we are ready to mobilise.

Common Questions About Our Occupational Health

If you are an employer trying to understand your occupational health obligations, you are not alone. COSHH, the Noise Regulations, the Vibration Regulations,  face fit testing requirements, management referrals, fitness for work — the legislative landscape for UK employers is complex, and the consequences of getting it wrong are significant. The questions below cover the most common enquiries we receive from HR managers, health and safety leads, site managers, and business owners across the UK. If your question is not answered here, contact Sigma Health directly and one of our occupational health team will respond within one working day.

What occupational health services does Sigma Health provide?
Sigma Health provides a full range of employer-focused occupational health services across the UK, including safety critical medicals, face fit testing, health surveillance, management referrals, fit to work assessments, absence management support, and biological monitoring. All services are delivered by GMC-registered doctors and NMC-registered nurses and are designed specifically for UK employers who need fast, compliant, and clinically robust occupational health provision without the delays associated with NHS or generalist healthcare providers.
How quickly can Sigma Health mobilise for an on-site visit?
In most cases, Sigma Health can confirm an on-site visit within days of your initial enquiry. We operate a nationwide mobile occupational health service and deploy trained, registered clinicians directly to your workplace — whether you are based in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, or anywhere else across the UK. For urgent requirements, including pre-employment medicals or face fit testing ahead of a site start date, contact us directly and we will prioritise your booking.
Is face fit testing a legal requirement for UK employers?
Yes. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) and the HSE's Approved Code of Practice for respiratory protective equipment, UK employers are legally required to ensure that any RPE issued to workers provides an adequate fit for the individual wearing it. That fit must be verified by a formal face fit test conducted to HSE INDG 479 standards before the respirator is used in a hazardous environment. Failure to comply leaves employers exposed to HSE enforcement action, prosecution, and unlimited civil liability if a worker suffers a respiratory injury.
What is a safety critical medical and who needs one?
A safety critical medical is a formal fitness assessment conducted by an occupational health professional to determine whether a worker is medically fit to carry out a safety-sensitive role without posing a risk to themselves or others. Safety critical medicals are required for workers in construction, rail, utilities, logistics, manufacturing, offshore, aviation, and a wide range of other industries where a medical episode — a blackout, a cardiovascular event, a seizure — could result in serious injury or death. Sigma Health conducts safety critical medicals to DVLA, Network Rail, OGUK, and industry-specific standards nationwide.
How much does occupational health cost for a UK employer?
The cost of occupational health services varies depending on the type of assessment, the volume of workers, and whether delivery is on-site or at clinic. Sigma Health provides transparent, competitive pricing with no hidden charges — a single on-site visit price covers travel, testing, and same-day certification for face fit testing and health surveillance. For management referrals, fit to work assessments, and safety critical medicals, pricing is provided on enquiry based on your specific requirements. In almost every case, the cost of a Sigma Health occupational health service is significantly lower than the cost of an unmanaged absence, a failed HSE inspection, or an employment tribunal claim that could have been avoided with proper clinical documentation.
What types of health surveillance does Sigma Health provide?
Sigma Health provides a full range of employer-focused health surveillance programmes across the UK, including audiometry for noise-exposed workers; spirometry and lung function testing for workers exposed to respiratory hazards, dusts, fumes, and sensitisers; HAVS assessments including Stockholm Workshop Scale grading for workers exposed to hand-arm vibration; skin surveillance for workers exposed to dermal hazards and potential sensitisers; biological monitoring for workers exposed to lead, solvents, and other substances absorbed through the skin or inhalation; and health surveillance for workers exposed to isocyanates, wood dust, flour dust, and other occupational asthmagens. All health surveillance is conducted by trained, qualified occupational health nurses and physicians and produces the documented records required to demonstrate compliance to the HSE.
What is a HAVS assessment?
A HAVS assessment screens workers for Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome — a serious, progressive, and irreversible condition caused by regular use of vibratory tools. Required under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 for workers at or above the exposure action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8). Common in construction, utilities, rail, highways, and groundworks.
How long must health surveillance records be kept?
A minimum of 40 years under COSHH — reflecting the long latency of occupational diseases like asbestosis and occupational asthma. Records must be confidential, GDPR-compliant, and available for HSE inspection. Sigma Health produces compliant individual health records.
Can Sigma Health run our health surveillance programme long term?
Yes. We design and manage rolling health surveillance programmes for UK employers — identifying which workers need which surveillance, at what frequency, and scheduling visits on a recurring basis. Your compliance record stays current, your workers stay monitored, and you have everything you need if the HSE inspects.

Still have a question that is not covered above? Every workforce is different, every hazard profile is different, and every employer's compliance position is different. What matters is that you get the right answer for your specific situation — not a generic response from a website. Sigma Health's occupational health team works directly with UK employers every day, across every sector, on every type of occupational health requirement from a single safety critical medical to a nationwide rolling health surveillance programme. Pick up the phone, send us an enquiry, or use the form — and we will give you a straight answer, fast.
