Proteins in the urine, dander and saliva of rats and mice can cause rhinitis, asthma and skin reactions, and a proportion of exposed staff become sensitised, usually within the first few years. Anyone working with laboratory animals should have a baseline respiratory questionnaire and spirometry, closer follow-up in the first year and regular checks after that.
Enzymes, some reagents and glutaraldehyde-type disinfectants are also sensitisers, and constant glove use and hand washing cause irritant dermatitis, so skin surveillance is standard in many labs. Where a chemical can be measured in the body, biological monitoring confirms that containment is working.
